4 A’s worth sharing this week: a lifelong Broadway dream come true, Lawrence speaks up about the ticketing industry, vinyl's resurgence, new music, and more...
Here are four things (A’s) we thought were worth sharing this week:
A1. Last year, a small-town girl from upstate New York fulfilled her lifelong dream of becoming a professional performer. Covering the roles of Cady Heron, Regina George, and Janis Sarkisian, Adriana Scalice (a friend of foray) reflects on the last 10 months of tour life, on the Foray Music podcast this week. “It has been a dream come true,” Adriana says. This past summer, she had the opportunity to perform in her hometown at Auditorium Theater in Rochester, NY.
A2. Clyde Lawrence and Jordan Cohen of the soul/pop band Lawrence spoke up for touring artists regarding Live Nation and Ticketmaster.
Two months ago, band members of Lawrence testified in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee to discuss the consequences of Live Nation as a promoter and a venue, explaining how artists, especially those with smaller fanbases, are not fairly compensated when Live Nation is concerned. “Ever since we started touring, we noticed what felt like lopsided deal mechanics in certain aspects of the live music industry,” Clyde writes. In the hearing, he says, “In our case, roughly 50% of our earnings are used to cover expenses.” The testimony happened soon after the Taylor Swift ticket debacle.
CFO of SeatGeek Jack Groetzinger spoke to lawmakers in a hearing, saying “The only way to restore competition in this industry is to break up Ticketmaster and Live Nation.”
A3. CDs are on their way out, and vinyl is making a return. For the first time since 1987 vinyl has outsold CDs. Streaming is still the biggest driver in the growth of the music industry with it making up 84% of recorded music revenue; however, physical music formats (vinyl, cds, etc.) have made a resurgence in the past couple of years. According to NPR, this resurgence has largely been led by young buyers that found a newfound interest in vinyl recordings.
A4. New music this week: Pianist, composer, and friend of Foray Camila Cortina released her debut album Sonera which examines her “roots as a Cuban-born artist and the influences of global sounds she continues to interact with during her pilgrimage around the world.” According to the Indiependent, Sabrina Carpenter’s fifth studio album, emails i can’t send fwd:, “invites the listener to take a ride on an emotional roller-coaster, exploring the inner corners of Carpenter’s mind.” Pop singer-songwriter, Tori Kelly, marks her debut on Epic Records with the release of her new single missin u.
Thanks for reading! As the saying goes, “this newsletter is free, but it’s not cheap.” The best way to support Foray Music is to share the link on social media and become a subscriber (or snag a hoodie!).
